Even Monkeys work well in groups, please why can’t we?
My first real trace of democracy was when I entered the USA in 1986 at the age of 21. I remember the first thing that stuck me was this huge signs that hung over emigration at the Dulles Airport in Washington DC that clearly demarcated the Americans from the rest of us. The signs said ‘Citizens’ and the other ‘Aliens’, somehow then this amused me. I enjoyed America during this time, as America was then rich. The country was going through one of its best times ever.
The rest I say is history dominated by 9/11, the advent of homeland security and honestly American fear. America was never scared before, they were now. For a nation that powerful and rich this was too much to bear. Recession and chaos followed.
But my more recent visits to the Homeland of the World have proved but one thing. When the going gets tough, the Americans get going. Obama became President. The Americans had a leader once again, tall, suave and cool, American! Despite all the internal squabbles amongst the liberals and conservatives, slowly but surely America is rising again. The very terrorism that almost left that great country in shame has united them and they will more than prevail, they will soon shine, as Americans.
The problems in England and Europe are far more serious. The collapse of USSR and the formation of the European Union itself brought about huge migration, a fact that they are paying for now. They will find it harder to recover, but they too will prevail, maybe longer than America to shine, but they will. Because despite all the bickering, when the chips are down the citizens of these countries unite.
I openly criticise England, but I also equally praise its positives, which far outweigh the shortcomings.
Simply, when in Rome, please do as Romans. It makes sense more than anything. Don’t bloody hang around sabotaging the country you live in. Piss off!
So to my motherland Sri Lanka. Three decades of terrorism ravaged the country. Terrorism was defeated and the riches of growing to be Asia’s Trade and Tourism hub promised for Sri Lanka. But no one has accounted for history.
History shows that the inevitability of failure hangs over Sri Lanka permanently.
We can beat Singapore and Thailand who also compete to be Asia’s Trade and Tourism hubs. But we never will. Because unlike America and England, our people can never unite as one.
The leader who bought us democracy and forgiveness gave us a noose to hang ourselves; The Executive Presidency.
The one who was with the people rudely assassinated before reaching our goals of a Sri Lanka better than Singapore.
There was the one who was the most popular and elected easily. All she did were to make sure she and her friends enjoyed themselves with impunity.
Then was the one who brought us peace. The Chameleon half man who foolishly believed that we brought what he sold.
Then came the king and conqueror. Who through war ensured our sovereignty.
And a General who never should have.
With power comes great responsibility for rulers. With freedom and democracy also comes great responsibility for a country’s people. It is not a case of with or against the ruling government in Sri Lanka; it must be a case of citizens united in their efforts for a better Sri Lanka.
The rulers must please practise a little compassion, allow democracy to rule, not the rule of dictatorship. Before you correct many, it is but easy to correct yourselves, think unselfishly and above all in a just and fair manner. The many will immediately fall into grace. Be a king if you must your Excellency, but rule justly with justice for all.
A member of parliament in the United Kingdom recently was given a traffic ticket for using his mobile phone while driving. An expenses scandal resulted in many Members of Parliament having to resign. The minister for defence also had to resign following his involvement with a friend who was at official defence arms procurement meetings between UK and it’s allies.
Like you and your government won the hearts and minds of all us by defeating terrorism in Sri Lanka, reinforce our love and belief of you by ruling justly.
It’s not too late for Sri Lanka to change, but it must start with you and your government leading by example your Excellency. You are a intelligent and compassionate man, show your people that compassion.
